The massive swarm glided out of folded space and blinked into existence approximately one hundred eighteen million kilometers from the fourth planet in the target solar system. Unlike an artificially generated wormhole, the void didn’t tear itself open. In fact, there was little effect beyond the sphere appearing. If an observer were looking at it, all they would’ve seen was the background stars blurring as the transition completed.

The distance was just far enough to ensure no trap awaited, as the swarm had horrible memories of its near destruction at the hands of its Optami creators so many years ago.

There are far more space-going vessels than last surveyed. The hive mind processed real-time sensor data and realized that many of the designs were unknown to them. These life-forms were able to find others to assist them. Curious.

It only took a few more seconds to process the combat capabilities of the warships arrayed around the artifact-containing world. Fusion reactors. Only a few have antimatter power. These vessels cannot stand against us.

More data came in, and the hive was finally shocked. An active wormhole connected to a nearby galaxy. The interloper species—humanity—must have found a way to activate it.

Still, an extragalactic wormhole, while impressive, wasn’t a weapon. So the swarm moved forward, its objective at long last in sight. Nothing would stop it from its goal.
